The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has selected its nominees in three categories of the 2020 Student Heritage Awards competition. The awards are one of many programs designed by the organization to support a new generation of talent in the early stages of their cinematography careers.

In the vast history of film and video, there’s perhaps no cinematic or editing technique more recognizable or powerful than the montage. Movie-lovers like us see it in cheesy hits from the 1980s and 1990s like Bloodsport and Dirty Dancing. We see it in critically acclaimed art films like The Godfather and Citizen Kane. We even see its classical roots in Battleship Potemkin (1925) and recreated and homaged in The Untouchables (1987).

I’ve mentioned before that one of the best books on screenwriting I’ve read is actually about editing: “In the Blink of an Eye”, written by the esteemed Walter Murch. Here is a nice video (18 minutes long), a PowerPoint presentation with Murch talking about the “three fathers of cinema”: Beethoven, Flaubert, Edison.

Visualization services company, OPSIS, recently called on VFX Legion to lend its talents to Songbird, director Adam Mason's dystopian thriller from producer Michael Bay.
